City partners with FFC on habitat project

At its December 2009 meeting the Rainier City Council agreed to have the city extend into its municipal watershed the habitat project that Bob Burnham, FFC Vice President, has initiated on his Fox Creek property. The project would consist of placing large logs and root wads at selected sites along the stream to create pools as rearing habitat for young fish and to dissipate stream energy during heavy run-off events. Margaret Magruder of the Lower Columbia River Watershed Council will seek grant funding for the project; selected trees will be provided by the city from its stands along the creek and by Burnham, whose family tree farm straddles the creek. A private company will be hired to fall the trees and secure them in place.
