FFC’s annual meeting on February 19 will be followed at 7:45 pm by the evening’s program, presented by Irene Martin of Skamokawa. Her talk is entitled, “Fishing and fish-canning on the Columbia River.”
Irene Martin is an award-winning author, known particularly for her books and articles on Columbia River regional and fisheries history. She has fished commercially with her husband Kent on the Columbia River, Willapa Bay, and in Alaska. Her latest titles are The Flight of Bumble Bee, the Columbia River Packers Association and a Century in the Pursuit of Fish, and a book of poems, The Family that Never Threw Anything Away.
In 2013 Irene received the David Douglas award from the Washington State Historical Society.
She lives in Skamokawa, Washington, where she is an active community member, currently serving on the Board of the St. James Family Center, the Lower Columbia Fish Recovery Board, and on the Board of Trustees of the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria.
